Cullen's a baby

Or not. The other day, I wanted to see if Cullen would indulge me in a little trip down memory lane...of course he stayed swaddled for all of 2 seconds. Sometimes he lets me hold him like a baby right before going down for a nap. Other than that, he's a "big boy"!

The Building Blocks of Boyhood

"I was once leading a seminar for teachers at our Christian school, and in the course of discussion mentioned that many of the girls in the school would, within a few short years, be adult women and would take their place in our midst. The teachers heard all this with aplomb, but when I went on to say that within a few short years the boys they were instructing would be lawyers, airline pilots, pastors, etc., the looks on the faces of the assembled teachers ranged from concern to mild panic. Boys take a lot of faith."

"This is good because the presence or absence of faith reveals whether or not we have a biblical doctrine of our future...

"Say a boy breaks a chair because he was jumping from a bunk bed. Unbelief sees the cost of replacing the chair. Faith sees aggressiveness and courage, both of which obviously need to be directed and disciplined. Suppose a boy gets into a fight protecting his sister. Unbelief sees the lack of wisdom that created a situation that could have been easily avoided; faith sees an immature masculinity that is starting to assume the burden of manhood."

"When Theodore Roosevelt was at Harvard, he taught Sunday school for a time at Christ Church, until he was dismissed. A boy showed up one Sunday with a black eye. He admitted he had been fighting, and on a Sunday too. He told the future president that a bigger boy had been pinching his sister, and so he fought him. TR told him that he had done perfectly right and gave him a dollar."

Wedding woes...

Not my wedding, but what to wear to my brother's wedding. The problem is there are actually three events:

1. Rehearsal Dinner
2. Dessert Reception
3. Wedding and Reception

So I really need three dresses. I am not sure exactly how formal the first two events will be, but I am guessing I probably need to wear a dress to each. I will probably regret this but here are many (way too many) dress/jewelry combos... please tell me which are your favorites and which one you think would be best for the wedding itself. Details of the wedding are:

4 pm start time, California in early August, outdoors (as is the reception).

Ok, here goes, in no particular order:

1. Black dress with pearls

2. Black dress with sparkly jewelry

3. Black and white print with black jewelry (left) or pearls (right)

4. Black and white dress with pearls
6. Black and white with sparkly jewelry
More black and white, seated

7. Blue and ivory print
I regret that most of the dresses are black and white but that is

A. 99% of what is available for purchase right now and
B. what fit right.

Sorry for the somewhat inconsistent color correction on all these pics too. Anyway, by the looks of things I'm sure the wedding will be a sea of black and white which I unfortunately will be contributing to. Now, I also picked up these sandals

which I was thinking I might be able to wear with the black and white print dress to something other than the wedding, depending on what you all think (maybe they are not fancy enough?)

The shoe salesperson said no cork at the wedding itself. No comments about my white legs, Hildy, and yes I will wear hose with the other shoes! I just didn't feel like putting them on for the photo shoot.

Help me out here all you fashionistas......

Our anniversary - July 7, 2001

To get completely caught up, here is a snapshot from our wedding day. (And it wouldn't have been *quite* so late if this photo had loaded properly two days ago.) Seven years! It has flown by.

We had a very nice evening out, first at "Guadalajara" in downtown Norfolk (which was excellent); then we saw the movie Baby Mama which was quite funny. And overall, was a hard-to-find-these-days comedy that didn't rely on crude humor. We almost never get out to the movies these days (which unexpectedly I don't really miss too much), so it was very nice to have picked a good one. We don't even rent movies anymore because we never find time to watch them. We have been keeping the video stores in business though, since even unwatched, they still get returned late!

Father's Day

Long overdue, but here are some photos of Ken and Cullen on Father's Day. Cullen tried to help dad open his present, then he screeched, then he smiled. The present was a little handmade photo book complete with photos of Cullen and his dad from the past year. (Does anyone out there do Stampin' Up?) Please excuse Cullen's messy hair--he hadn't yet hired his assistant to help him in the morning :-)

Rules for Grooming

Cullen shows us how a young man prepares to greet the day:

Figure 1. Wet hair and gather the necessary supplies.

Figure 2. Have assistant comb hair to your preferred style, while you begin teeth-brushing.

Figure 3. Give full concentration to brushing teeth, lest you miss one (of six).

Figure 4. While continuing to scrub those teeth, secure toothpaste.

Figure 5. Pause for a moment to admire your handiwork.

Figure 6. Read rules for toothpaste application. (Oops, we're jumping ahead...toothpaste application will be explained in a future episode.)
